The future of medical education and strong regional medical workforces were the cornerstone topics of a two-day Regional Medical Pathway (RMP) Showcase presented in Gladstone over the weekend.

Over 120 Year 1 medical students from The University of Queensland (UQ) recently returned from a four day “immersion” tour, where they experienced the charms and challenges of rural and remote living.

Last Friday, over 80 regional and rural community groups, health care providers, researchers and industry representatives met with select University of Queensland (UQ) researchers at the Rural, Regional and Remote (RRR) Health Research Showcase in Toowoomba.

An Australian-first university and hospital partnership that has set the benchmark for regional medical training has been renewed for another five years.

The Regional Medical Pathway – a medical education and training pathway pioneered by CQUniversity, The University of Queensland, and the Central Queensland and Wide Bay Hospital and Health Services – will now see the popular program continue into the future thanks to the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding between four the partners.

Our Rural and Remote Medicine (RRM) team are bringing the “country to the city” this Intro week. 


Over fifteen RRM academics and rural and remote preceptors including doctors, nurses and indigenous health educators from locations such as Theodore, St George, Emerald, Laidley, Roma and Bundaberg are ready to deliver clinical skill and cultural sessions to 47 metropolitan students at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and the Mayne Building at Herston, over the next three days.

The University of Queensland warmly welcomed the future doctors for the Darling Downs – South West regions, celebrating the commencement of the inaugural Graduate Entry cohort of the Darling Downs – South West Medical Pathway.

There are several groups of people that get to know the students in the Doctor of Medicine program: academics, clinicians and hospital staff at placements, but for Dr Geoff Mallet a group that has nothing to do with medicine saw him quite often during his degree.
