Rural generalist

The Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway (QRGP) provides a coordinated pathway to Rural Generalism in Queensland. The pathway is 5-years (full time) consisting of 3 training periods:

PGY1 and PGY2 - Pre-vocational Plus
PGY3 – Advanced Skills Training (AST)
PGY4 and PGY5 – Vocational Training (completing fellowship with Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine and/or The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners).

Entry requirements/pre-requisites

Successfully complete a medical degree from an accredited Australian or New Zealand university and be in the final year of study at time of application.
Hold an Intern applicant group status of A or B: Medical graduates of Australian or New Zealand Universities with Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency.
Have received or be eligible upon graduation for provisional medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

Application and selection process

Applications open approximately March each year, however prospective trainees can express interest in joining the pathway at any time. QRGP Intern positions are allocated through the Rural Generalist Intern Recruitment Campaign and is separate to the Queensland Health hospital and health service intern recruitment campaign.

Once trainees are ready to commence PGY3 – Advanced Skills training (AST), recruitment and allocation of positions is dependent on the advanced skill of choice. The QRGP coordinates a statewide recruitment and placement process for AST positions in mental health, adult internal medicine, anaesthetics, obstetrics and paediatrics. This campaign opens in April/May each year for commencement the following year. To secure an AST position in emergency medicine, surgery or Indigenous health, trainees need to apply through the RMO Campaign, for commencement the following year.
