Intensive care medicine

To become an Intensivist, you will need to apply for fellowship with the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand. Fellowship is a minimum 6 year (full time equivalent) training pathway consisting of:

6 months Foundation Training (must be completed within 3 years prior to applying to the college to commence specialty training)
24 months Core Training
12 months Clinical Medicine Training (6 months Emergency / Acute Medicine and 6 months Internal Medicine)
12 months Clinical Anaesthesia Training
6 months Elective Training
12 months Transition Year Training

Additional requirements are that registrars must:

Complete 6 months in a rural hospital
Satisfy Paediatric exposure requirement

Entry requirements/pre-requisites

A Medical degree and completion of a 12-month internship.
For Australian or New Zealand applicants, hold full general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia or Medical Council of New Zealand (respectively).
Have citizenship, permanent residency or the necessary VISA to undertake training at the employment hospital.
Completed foundation training (6 months intensive care supervised experience in a CICM accredited unit within the last 3 years).
Registration or eligible to register with CICM.

Application and selection process

In Queensland, the Queensland Intensive Care Training Pathway provides a centralised selection and allocation process for intensive care medicine trainees to accredited adult and paediatric intensive care units. Applicants must apply through the RMO campaign to secure an employment contract for a position in an accredited intensive care unit.

Trainees will also need to register with CICM after completion of Foundation Training to commence their fellowship training.
