To become a paediatrician, you will need to apply for fellowship with The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). Fellowship is a 6-year (full time equivalent) training pathway consisting of 3 years (full time equivalent) basic training in Paediatrics and Child Health followed by 3 years (full time equivalent) advanced training in General Paediatrics.  

Basic

Years 1-3

Paediatrics and Child Health – Basic Training: minimum 36 months (full time) consisting of:

  • 24 months (full time) core training (including a minimum of 9 months general pediatric medicine; 3 months pediatric emergency medicine; 3 months neonatology in a perinatal unit; and 3 months in a paediatric medical specialty)
  • Maximum 12 months non-core training
  • At least 6 months at a Level 3 teaching hospital over the course of training

Advanced

Years 4-6

Advanced Training in General Paediatrics: 36 months (full time) consisting of:

  • Minimum of 24 months (full time) core training including:
    • 12 months general pediatrics (including at least 6 months in rural training, and 6 months with a perinatal component)12 months (full time) non-core training
    • 6 months acute care training
    • 6 months community/developmental training
  •  Maximum 12 months of non-core training
  • You must complete your Advanced Training at more than 1 training setting, with at least 6 months at a second setting.
