To become a paediatrician, you will need to apply for fellowship with The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). Fellowship is a 6-year (full time equivalent) training pathway consisting of 3 years (full time equivalent) basic training in Paediatrics and Child Health followed by 3 years (full time equivalent) advanced training in General Paediatrics.  

Basic

Years 1 & 2

 
Paediatrics and Child Health – Basic Training: minimum 36 months (full time) consisting of:
  • 24 months (full time) core training (including a minimum of 9 months general pediatric medicine; 3 months pediatric emergency medicine; 3 months neonatology in a perinatal unit; and 3 months in a paediatric medical specialty)
  • Maximum 12 months non-core training
 
Please note that trainees must spend a minimum of 9 months at a Level 3 teaching hospital.
Year 3
Advanced
 
Years 4 & 5
Advanced Training in General Paediatrics: 36 months (full time) consisting of:

Minimum 24 months (full time) core training including:

  • 12 months general pediatrics (including at least 6 months in rural training, and 6
  • months with a perinatal component)
  • 6 months acute care training
  • 6 months community/development training
Maximum 12 months of non-core training.
