To become an Emergency Medicine Specialist, you will need to apply for fellowship with the Australian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM). Fellowship is a 5-year (full time) training pathway.

For trainees commencing 2022 onwards, the pathway consists of four training stages:

  • Stage 1: 12 months full time equivalent in an adult / mixed Emergency Department (ED)
  • Stage 2: 12 months full time equivalent in ED
  • Stage 3: 12 months full time equivalent in ED
  • Stage 4: Minimum 6 months full time equivalent in an ED accredited for Stage 4, and 6 months full time equivalent of elective rotation (either ED or non-ED) in a Stage 4 approved facility.

6 months full time equivalent in non-ED to be completed anytime throughout Stages 1-3.
6 months full time equivalent in Critical Care to be completed anytime throughout Stages 2-4.

For existing trainees, the pathway consists of:

Provisional Training - 12 months FTE (6 months ED, 6 months ED or Non-ED) in an Accredited ED

Years 2 & 3
Advanced Training:  48 months FTE including:
  • 6 months FTE in critical care; and
  • 6 months FTE non-ED time.
  • 6 months discretionary
  • 6 months Early Phase Advanced Training

  • 6 months Early Phase Advanced Training
  • 6 months Late Phase Advanced Training

Additional requirements are that registrars:

  • Must complete minimum 6 months in a single adult/ mixed major referral hospital.
  • Must complete minimum 12 months in an adult/mixed non-major referral Emergency Department.
