To become an Anaesthetist, you will need to apply for fellowship with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA). Fellowship is a 5-year (full time) training pathway consisting of 4 training periods:

6 months Introductory Training
18 months Basic Training
24 months Advanced Training
12 months Provisional Fellowship Training (PFT)

Entry requirements/pre-requisites

General Medical Registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
Be a citizen of Australia or New Zealand or a permanent resident of Australia.
24 months prevocational medical education and training (earliest year of entry is PGY3), including at least 12 months of training in areas other than anaesthetics and intensive care.
Secured a registrar position in an accredited training department.

Application and selection process

There is a two stage process to becoming an anaesthetic trainee. The first is the application to the College (ANZCA) which can occur after 52 weeks of prevocational medical training (end of PGY1). Selection into the ANZCA program is based on your written application addressing the selection criteria and CV, an interview and supporting referee reports.

The second stage is registration which occurs once a trainee has secured a training position within an ANZCA accredited department.

In Queensland, the Queensland Anaesthetic Rotational Training Scheme (QARTS) is a sponsored body that is responsible for the overall recruitment and administration of the placement process, and they work closely with Queensland Health, therefore, prospective trainees need to apply for an accredited training position through the QH RMO campaign.

Once you have secured the training position through the RMO campaign, you can then apply for registration with ANZCA and commence your training.
