Toowoomba celebrates graduating medical students

17 Dec 2021

This Saturday, thirty-four students based at The University of Queensland Rural Clinical School (UQRCS) Toowoomba will graduate with a Doctor of Medicine (MD).

After completing their fourth and final year of post-graduate study in Toowoomba, the graduates will enjoy a well-earned break before heading off to their places of internship for 2022.

UQRCS Toowoomba Director Dr Doogie Whitcombe says that the determination and focus the students demonstrated this year will place them in good stead as future doctors.

“Flexibility, adaption and perseverance have been some of the amazing qualities we have seen in our students this year.

“I’m proud that they not only dedicated themselves to their studies, but also immersed themselves in the community and represented UQ at various events in their free time,” he said.

Hikes and trivia were regular events on the students’ social calendars when they weren’t helping out at high school work experience events and health professional visits from rural health club; TROHPIQ.

Head of UQRCS, Associate Professor Riitta Partanen says that the Rural Clinical School presents a wonderful opportunity for medical students to build their skills and confidence to become well rounded doctors who want to make a difference to the wellbeing of the community.

“Our students experience the full gamut of health care in the regional areas which places them in good stead to not only practice kindness and compassion, but to think critically and advocate for better health outcomes for their patients.

“Congratulations to our graduating students; you should be incredibly proud of your efforts and we look forward to see you grow in the medical field,” she said.
